Mid-century Modern Album Storage Cabinet

About The Project

This cabinet was built for an audiophile to store part of his extensive album collection. The cabinet is built in the Mid-century Modern style and features crisp clean lines. The cabinet is constructed of solid walnut. The corners are waterfall mitred joints. Waterfall is a technique in which grain of the wood continues (waterfalls) from one side of the joint to the other. In this piece the sides and top are waterfalled. Three long boards were glued together on their edges to create the wide blank for the sides and top. The side and top pieces were sequentially cut and joined with 45 degree mitre joints. The result is that the grain continues from the left side up onto the top and then down onto the right side.

Another design detail is the beveled faces of the cabinet. The faces taper in slightly and visually frame the interior shelves and dividers, which extend to the edge of the bevels.
