Work From Home Over the Bed Live Edge Table
About The Project
This table is a cooperative piece made with a friend. This was her first woodworking furniture project. She did all the handwork while I assisted with wood selection and handled cutting and joining the miters and spraying on the finish. The table was made at the height of the Covid pandemic. Like many, my friend was stuck working from home. When she first contacted me about the project she said she wanted a piece of furniture to “make her more productive in bed.” After my startled pause, she clarified that her preferred home office location was her bed, but balancing a laptop and coffee cup on the bed had become untenable.
The table was built to pull over her bed and function as a desk work surface. When not in use it is pushed to the foot of the bed.
The table was made from a very unique red oak wood slab, which features live edges on both sides, wormholes, and ingrown bark “raisins”. The clear finish accents these features. The legs of the table are waterfall joined to the top. In this process the left leg, top and right leg were consecutively cut from the plank of wood and mitered at the corners so the wood grain runs contiguously from the top down the legs.
The end result is an unusual and beautiful piece of furniture.
