Painted Contemporary Buffet With Sliding Doors

About The Project

This buffet sits in the customer’s dining room alongside the Contemporary Oval White Oak Dining Table that I made for them. The customer wanted a sleek, angular design to contrast the smooth curves of the table and chairs.

The buffet is made from medium density fiberboard (MDF). MDF is an engineered wood product made by breaking down wood fibers, combining them with resin and wax, and applying high temperature and pressure to form dense, smooth sheets. It was perfect for this project because it has a grain-free and dead flat and stable paintable surface.

The piece features three sliding doors which open to reveal the three inner storage sections. Each section has a single adjustable shelf. The doors slide on two tracks, which allow two doors to be opened at a time. In keeping with the sleek design, the doors have no exposed hardware. Pushing either of the two end doors to the side causes them to rebound inward, thus allowing them to be fully opened by pushing the outside edge towards the center.

The buffet sides and top are extra thick for visual weight purposes. These were constructed by making hollow rectangular torsion boxes, which were mitred and joined at the corners.

The buffet has a high gloss painted finish. This was done in four steps, similar to how cars are painted. Primer was first sprayed on. This was followed by multiple coats of pigmented automotive paint. The paint was then topcoated with automotive clearcoat. Once the clearcoat cured it was polished to a high gloss using polishing compounds and an electric buffer.
