Wooden Writers Desk That Converts to a Table

About The Project

This project had a three part goal:

  1. The customer is an author and professor. When working she prefers to change between sitting and standing. The desk didn’t need to adjust in height, it just had to be comfortable in both positions.

  2. The desk fits in a narrow spot between the kitchen and dining area. It needed to be large enough to house multiple pieces of computer equipment, but also had to allow for passage alongside it.

  3. Given that it is placed between the kitchen and dining area, the desk needed to convert to a table for use while entertaining.

When used as a desk, the magnetically attached end apron is removed and stored under the desktop. A keyboard tray pulls out, and two side extension wings unfold. A slip on additional arm support is used while writing by hand. The desk can also be used by standing at the long edge and placing the laptop on the desktop.

The desk is converted to a table by sliding in the keyboard tray and reattaching the end apron.

The desk was made in a piano shape to maximize passage room while providing the needed work space. The desk sitst along a bank of sunny windows. The sunlight highlights the beautiful grain pattern on the natural ash top. Interwoven swooping aprons of stained ash connect the legs and visually support the top.
