Wall Mounted Cherry and Maple Glass Front Bookcase

About The Project

This glass front bookcase was made to house a portion of the customer’s extensive book collection. They decided to work with me because they liked the Living Room China Cabinet they saw on my website. The bookcase uses several design elements from this piece. These include the arched top, matching arched handles and the use of two woods. Their handsome cherry and maple bedroom furniture can be seen in the reflections on the doors. Design elements from this were also pulled into the bookcase. They chose the same woods and the door window grids mimic the rails and stiles on the footboard.

Because this is a hanging cabinet that is filled with heavy books, constructing the bookcase required particular thought to the strength and mounting of the piece. The weight of the adjustable shelves is transferred to the sides and middle partition. These in turn transfer the weight to a ¾” thick plywood back. The bookcase is mounted to the wall using a French cleat. This is a mounting system using two interlocking 45-degree beveled wood strips. One strip is mounted on the wall bevel up, and the other on the bookcase back bevel down. The more weight that is put in the cabinet, the tighter it pulls against the wall.

This is a lovely addition to their bedroom which contains their favorite reads.
