Historic Dutch and Swinging Kitchen Doors

 About The Project

The highlight of this project was the house the doors were made for. The house was built around 1890 in the Tangletown neighborhood of Minneapolis. Known as the Nathaniel and Anne McMillan McCarthy House, this residence is recognized for its unique Shingle-style architecture, gorgeous interior woodwork, and stunning stained glass windows. This regal interior is complemented by the customers’ extensive modern art collection.

The customers were remodeling their kitchen and they commissioned me to build three sets of doors. I designed and built a Dutch door which connects the kitchen to the mudroom. Additionally I designed and built two sets of swinging doors that connect the kitchen to the hall and dining room. The design challenge was to make the doors fit the period of the home. The construction challenge was fitting the near zero clearance doors in an old home environment where none of the floors or walls were level.
