Large Solid Ash Coffee Table With Turned Legs

About The Project

This coffee table is made from two slabs of ash that were consecutively cut from the same tree, thus ensuring uniformity of grain pattern and color. The boards were glued together in a bookmatched pattern. In this process, the boards are opened and glued together along matching edges, much like opening two opposing pages of a book. This results in the boards creating a mirror image of each other.

The four turned large round legs are joined together by a lattice of smaller diameter turned rods. This detail adds visual lightness to the mass of the top and legs.

The translucent dark color is achieved via black dye. Unlike stain which is typically used in commercial furniture production, dye colors the wood without creating a muddled homogenous look. The details of the grain pattern are highlighted, not covered up, by the dye.
