Art Deco Mahogany Fireplace Mantel and Benches

About The Project

This commission was from a customer that I have made several pieces for. They live in a lovely 1920’s era home that had a 1970’s family room addition. When it came time to remodel the family room that wanted to align the design closer to the rest of the house while giving it a modern flair.

My focus was the fireplace. The 1970’s addition had heavy cabinets surrounding the fireplace and visually dominating the room. While I don’t typically take on this kind of work, I’ve done my share of remodeling and agreed to make the space ready. This included removing the original cabinet and fireplace mantel, moving an electrical outlet, sheetrock, plastering and painting.

I built benches for each side of the fireplace. The benches feature herringbone patterned panels, which complement the herringbone wall tile. The front of the benches are fixed in place, and the bench tops lift up to provide access to the inner storage compartments.

A mahogany mantel was built in the Art Deco style, which the plaster ceiling moulding in the front of the house reflects. The twin L-shaped end trim pieces on the front of the mantel are covered in silver leaf. The silver leaf complements the gold leaf on the adjacent media cabinet’s hardware.
