Metro Chic Large Round Ebony Dining Table

About The Project

This large 70” diameter dining table features rare ebony wood veneer, which compliments the black walls and ceiling of the client’s formal dining room. The theme of the room is a 1950’s dining establishment. The table is meant to show elegance and class. Ebony wood is a highly dense, fine-grained hardwood, renowned for its jet-black heartwood and ability to take a glass-like polish. It is one of the most valuable timbers globally, frequently used for high-end musical instrument parts like guitar fingerboards, piano keys, and decorative furniture inlays. In this case, it was used to make an entire table.

The table is made from a plywood core with a solid walnut rim and ebony face veneer. The walnut rim was stained to match the color of the ebony. After the edge was glued on and shaped, the veneer was applied in a slip matched pattern. In this process, the veneer slices are consecutively laid out and glued together along opposing edges, much like dealing a deck of cards. This results in a matching grain pattern repeating across the surface of the table.

The center of the table is a lazy susan which makes for easy sharing of dinner accompaniments. A lead screw in the bottom of the table raises the lazy susan out of the table for easy cleaning in the event of a beverage or food spill.

The table is supported on a series of five curved 3-segment legs. Like the top, the legs are veneered in ebony. A center black sprocket connects the legs at the apex of their arches.
