About The Project
I’ve made several versions of this Mid-century Modern Plant stand. One was small at 36” and two larger at 60” tall. They reside in Minneapolis, rural Connecticut, and Atlanta. Each of the stands is comprised of groovy mid-century shaped platforms. The platform shapes, sizes, and positions were designed to meet each customers’ specific needs. For each customer I made a scale model so they could accurately understand what the design looked like. Trying to do this via sketches would be too difficult.
Two of these stands were presents from a husband to their wife. In both cases the husbands contacted me rather close to the celebration date, and unfortunately my shop schedule didn’t allow me to make the stands in time. As an alternative the husbands presented the model along with a commission process letter as their gift. I was then able to work with their wives at a later date to confirm the design and build the stands.
The stands are made of walnut, which is a wood typically used in Mid-century Modern furniture. As they hold plants, the stands are displayed in sunny locations. The rich hue of the walnut is illuminated by the sunlight, and contrasts beautifully with the plants’ green foliage.
The stands are finished with a tabletop grade urethane varnish that protects them from the inevitable plant pot drip.
