Ash Children’s Bedroom Twin Beds, Desk, and Bookcase

About The Project

This bedroom set was built for two high energy young brothers - the wacky boys. These were built around the time the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit was released. The boys loved the zany high energy of the movie, of which this design is meant to reflect.

The bedroom set consists of two matching twin beds, a desk, desk chair, bench and bookcase. The pieces are supported by turned rocket shaped legs which are tilted at a slight angle, giving the impression that they’re about to take off. All of the panels are curved. The only flat surfaces are the desk top and the sides of bed rails. These curves further accent the visual upward lift of the design, and they add a whimsical flare.

The legs and trim pieces are made of solid ash. The curved casework, headboards and footboards were made by first building a convex form. Glue was applied to layers of thin wood, which were then pressed over the form. In essence this is how commercial plywood is made, the difference here being that the result was curved versus flat panels. The panel surfaces were veneered in quarter sliced ash. Quarter slicing is the process of slicing the veneer with the cut perpendicular to the annual rings. This results in a tight, uniform and parallel grain pattern. The veneer was glued to the panels in a slip matched pattern. In this process, the veneer pieces are consecutively laid out along opposing edges, much like dealing a deck of cards. This results in a matching grain pattern repeating across the surface of the table. The results can be easily seen on the headboards and footboards.

The legs and trim pieces were colored with varying hues of dye. Unlike stain which is typically used in commercial furniture production, dye colors the wood without creating a muddled homogenous look. The details of the grain pattern are highlighted, not covered up, by the dye.
