Electronically Adjustable Wooden Sit-Stand Desk
About The Project
The design goal of this project was to build a sit-stand desk that doesn’t look like a standard adjustable height desk. The customer wanted a fine piece of furniture, not a metal desk that would be found in a typical corporate office. The desk also had to have a smaller footprint, which required making it look visually balanced.
The desk utilizes a high quality electronically adjustable frame from the UPLIFT Desk company. To achieve the design goal, the frame’s metal legs are encased in a pair of telescoping wooden sleeves. The soft curves of the top and legs add to the fine furniture design.
All wiring is hidden either under the desktop or within one of the leg sleeves, with a single wire exiting at the bottom of the sleeve. This includes the power for the lift mechanism, and power for under the desk 110 and USB outlets. This keeps the look and function of the desk smooth. A pullout keyboard and mouse tray add to its functionality.
The desk top is made from solid black limba. Black limba is native to West Africa. The black streaks in the wood are caused by mineral deposits. The pattern of the coloration is random, which adds to the beauty of the wood. Mother nature is wonderful in its raw form - you can’t manufacture this look. For the legs, veneer was sawn from the same boards as the top, thus ensuring the top and legs match. The exotic grain of the black limba is enhanced by the clear finish.
The piece makes a striking visual impression, and complements the owner’s Southwestern house wonderfully.
