Modern Queen Bed, Dressing Table, Chair and Nightstands

About The Project

This bedroom set is made of solid teak and ramin (Gonystylus). Both of these tropical woods have a nice tight grain pattern. This is because tropical trees grow year round, they have less distinct growth rings than northern climate trees. The dark chocolate color of the teak provides a nice contrast to the straw colored ramin. The pieces are finished with a handrubbed oil and wax. This protects the wood and gives a nice subtle glow to the grain, which a film finish like varnish would yield.

The bedroom set consists of a queen bed, dressing table, chair, and two nightstands.

The V form is used as a central design element. All pieces have a V notch in the ramin panels with an inset V teak detail. The legs are placed at a 45 degree angle to the sides, creating a V shaped negative space.

The bed features a low headboard and footboard and prominent bedrails. The bedrails support cross slates, on which the mattress rests. The rails are meant to be seen, which is accomplished by tucking in the bedcovers alongside the mattress.

The angularity of the design is softened by the three-legged oval shaped nightstands. The front aprons of the nightstands are the fronts of the drawers.

The dressing table has three drawers below the top. Like the nightstands, the front apron is the front of the drawers. The oval theme is carried over on the dressing table with the oval mirror. The frameless mirror is suspended over the table, given a floating appearance.
