This contemporary bedroom set is made of dark walnut with complementing white maple. The goal is to show off the beauty of the wood. All together this is a very stately and handsome bedroom set.
The headboard and foot board are made of solid walnut boards with the grain running horizontal. The boards were glued together at a slight angle to create a staggered bend. The glued boards were then shaped to smooth the staggered bend into a grateful arch. The headboard arches back and the footboard forward, creating an inviting space in between. The hefty maple legs support the headboard and footboard, and are joined by wide maple rails. The rails support cross slates, on which the mattress rests. The rails are meant to be seen, which is accomplished by tucking in the bedcovers alongside the mattress.
The design elements from the bed are continued on the dresser and two nightstands. I purposely choose to make the dresser’s drawer pattern non uniform; three drawers in the top row, and two each on the middle and bottom row. Each row of drawer fronts is cut consecutively from the same board, resulting in the grain running unbroken across the face of the dresser. The drawers are made of maple, with the fronts dovetailed joined to the sides. The dovetails highlight the walnut-maple contrast.
The sides and back of the dresser are made of bookmatched walnut panels. In this process, two consecutively cut boards are opened and glued together along matching edges, much like opening two opposing pages of a book. This results in the two boards creating a mirror image of each other. The sides of the dresser have two panels, and the back three. It's a pity the dresser will typically be placed up against a wall, as the back is as beautiful as the front.
The single drawer nightstands are scaled down versions of the dresser. Like on the dresser, the tops extend beyond the sides of the casework, creating a visual lift.
