Elegantly Curved Adjustable Music Stands
About The Project
I’ve made a series of these music stands which feature a graceful splayed and tapered three leg base. The sheet music rest tilts and locks in position on the central shaft via a wooden knob. The height of the music rest is adjusted by moving the central shaft up and down. The shaft also locks in place with a wooden knob. The legs and shafts of the stands in these photos are made of maple, cherry and walnut. The curved legs are made by gluing multiple wedge shaped plies together over a form.
With my various shop projects I inevitably collect a lot of interesting wood scrapes. The music rests are a great way to show off some beautiful offcut leftovers that would otherwise end up in the firewood bin. In one design the music rests have a central V shaped yoke with horizontal staves. The other design evokes autumn foliage with dyed maple leaves. The leaves are made from curly maple, which is a fluke in nature where the grain grows curly instead of straight. Multiple different colors of dye were applied to each leaf, which created varying color spectrum, much like on real autumn leaves. Once dyed, a high gloss finish was sprayed on the leaves. They were then glued together with epoxy glue to form the music rest.
While I’m based in Minneapolis, I have customers in various parts of the United States. Customers typically find me via my website. One of my music stands holds the record for the farthest shipped item; it was purchased by, and shipped to, a customer in Japan.
