Rectangular Bee's Wing Eucalyptus Dining Table
About The Project
This large 60” X 120” dining table features a stunning eucalyptus veneered top. Furniture grade eucalyptus is typically grown and harvested in it’s indigenous home of Australia and Tasmania. It is also grown on plantations in South America, Spain and Portugal. Eucalyptus is a fast growing and sustainable tree. A unique property of the wood is the dramatic bee’s wing pattern that forms in the grain. The pattern shows the beauty of nature, in particular when the sun illuminates it. This is particularly true of this table, which sits in a very sunny dining room. The veneer was applied in a slip matched pattern. In this process, the veneer slices are consecutively laid out and glued together along opposing edges, much like dealing a deck of cards. This results in a matching grain pattern repeating across the surface of the table.
The legs and trestle are oversized to give visual weight to the base, which is needed to balance the large top. The base of the table is painted to match the cabinets and trim in the dining room and adjoining kitchen. The customer purchased simple plastic IKEA chairs in the same color which pair nicely with the elegance of the table.
The table can easily seat ten. Additional chairs and place setting can be tucked in to accommodate fourteen. Because of the size of the top, there is enough overlay to allow for chairs to be placed in any position without interfering with the base.
