Classic Wooden Mahogany Runabout Boat Chairs

About The Project

I was commissioned to build these chairs after the customer saw my Classic Wooden Mahogany Runabout Boat Couch at a booth I had at an Antique and Classic Boat Association (ACBS) show. The two swiveling boat chairs are named after the family matriarch and patriarch. They reside in the customer’s northcentral Minnesota cabin overlooking a lake. The cabin had previously belonged to the customers’ grandparents, Nana and Pops. They provide a perfect perch for a morning coffee or a relaxing afternoon cocktail. They also are a great homage to the grandparents.

The chairs are made similarly to a real boat, with solid mahogany planking laid over an internal ribbed frame. The deck and sides are stained in three different colors, as many of the original boats were. The chairs are finished with a high gloss marine varnish. The chromed bump rails, exhaust port and rope cleats give the couch some extra bling. The tuck and roll upholstery adds a classy touch.

While I never had the honor of meeting Nana and Pops, I feel the fonts the customer chose for their names may reflect their personality. Nana had a bit of classy flair, while Pops was energetic and bubbly.
