Isamu Noguchi Inspired Mahogany End Tables
About The Project
These two mahogany end tables were commissioned to fit between a couch and two arm chairs in the customer’s cozy living room, thus resulting in the trapezoid and triangle shapes. The tables are inspired by Isamu Noguchi, who was a highly influential Japanese-American artist, master sculptor, and industrial designer celebrated for bridging Western modernism with traditional Japanese craftsmanship. In the furniture world he is famous for his Noguchi Coffee Table, which was designed in 1944 and mass-produced starting in 1947. It features an organic, biomorphic glass top balanced on two identical, interlocking curved wood legs.
The customer is an avid gardner, and many of her gardening books are stored on the triangle table’s lower shelf. A motion controlled overhead light assists in finding the books. The customer’s husband enjoys making jigsaw puzzles. The puzzle table features a pull out false bottom, which provides for puzzle working space and storage. The bottom shelf has a removable serving tray.
The two table tops are made from an exceptional piece of ribbon grained mahogany. The boards were glued together in a slip matched pattern. In this process, the boards are consecutively laid out and glued together along opposing edges, much like dealing a deck of cards. This results in a matching grain pattern repeating across the surface of the tables.
