Jointery

The function of the tools I use and how they work are explained here. Specific tools used are noted in bold.

The jointery is cut and all the pieces are “dry” tested fitted (no glue). Final assembly will happen after veneering and varnishing.

Because of the curved nature of the piece, once the curves are cut, many of the vertical and horizontal orientation points are lost. Various measurement and alignment methods are used to ensure the arches and top are positioned correctly. The main arch is attached to the base with bolts that attach through the bottom to the tee-nuts inside the arch. The downward arches are attached with “dominoes”, which are rectangular wooden blocks that insert into the downward arches and the main arch. The domino cutter, an ingenious German tool by the manufacturer Festool, cuts the slots for the dominoes.

The top is attached to downward arches with wooden splines. The multi-router is used to cut the slots for the spines in the arches. This device allows for x-y-z movement of the piece and the router’s cutting bit. A router with guide rails is used to cut the slots in the top.
