Making the Base
The function of the tools I use and how they work are explained here. Specific tools used are noted in bold.
The base is made of 6 layers of ¾” medium density fibreboard (MDF). This provides the mass needed to stabilize the table. Like the arches, the base is laminated using the vacuum press. Before the arcs are cut, center lines are established and the mounting hardware holes are drilled using the drill press. The arcs are drawn using a flexible fiberglass drawing bow. Changing the tension on the bow results in varying arc shapes and radiuses. They arcs are cut on the bandsaw and smoothed with the edge sander, disk sander, compass plane, and hand sanding.
