Contemporary Dining Table

Building and Shaping the Top

The function of the tools I use and how they work are explained here. Specific tools used are noted in bold.

The tabletop is made from two pieces of ¾” balitic birch plywood that were laminated together in the vacuum press. Various versions of the top curves were drawn on the top blank to determine the best shape. A quarter pattern was made for the desired shape, and the pattern was used to trace out the full shape. The curves were cut with a scroll saw, and trimmed using the pattern and router, as was done with the legs. Final cleanup and curve truing was done with a handplane and rasp.
