Prepping the Veneer
The function of the tools I use and how they work are explained here. Specific tools used are noted in bold.
The table is veneered in gorgeous European white oak. The veneer leaves are slightly over 13’ long and 15” wide. This came from a truly amazing tree. I find the process for how veneer is produced also amazing. See this YouTube explanation if you’re interested.
The top is veneered with three veneer leaves, layout side-by-side (slip matched). The customer selected what sections of the veneer they want used for the table top and legs. The veneer is first hand cut using a special fine-toothed veneer saw. A jig on the sliding table saw holds the veneer in place while the table slides in parallel past the blade. This results in a perfect straight line cut. The pieces are then layed out, and the seams are temporarily taped together. The veneer is cut slightly oversize, and will be trimmed after gluing to the substrate.
