Veneering
The function of the tools I use and how they work are explained here. Specific tools used are noted in bold.
The first step is appling the edgebanding. The flat edgeband on the table is made of two sections. Once section is glued on at a time. The edgeband is held in place with trucker cargo straps and various clamps while the glue dries. The legs feature a round edge. Separate rounded strips are made, and the veneer is glued on the strips in the vacuum press. The veneered strips are then glued to the legs.
The faces are veneered so the veneer overlaps the edgeband. The exception to this is the bottom of the table, where the edgeband overlaps the face veneer. The taped together veneer panels are clamped in place in the vacuum press while the glue dries. For the table, a flat “platten” with air evacuating groves is placed under the table. When the vacuum pump is run the atmospheric pressure presses the table onto the veneer. For the curved legs, a bag with a flexible air evacuation net is used. When the pump evacuates the air the bag conforms to the shape of the leg, pressing the leg into the veneer..
After gluing the veneer is trimmed flush with a trim router and hand tools.
