Walnut Table From the Yard

Finishing

The function of the tools I use and how they work are explained here. Specific tools used are noted in bold.

Before finishing, the table is disassembled and all the pieces are final sanded. A penetrating oil (Watco) is used as a base coat, with three coats of urethane that is made specifically for tables (Behlen’s Rock Hard Table Top Varnish). The oils brings out the color and depth of the grain. The top has some beautiful wave figure which the oil highlights. The urethane is sprayed on with a HVLP sprayer. Once the finish has cured, the top is rubbed out to the desired level of sheen using fine abrasives. On this table the sheen is satin.
